Boldness is a leadership trait to be mastered. Here are actions that make bold people admirable.

The day I went off to university, a friend gave me this quote. Over the years it has inspired me and I have seen it posted on the walls and bulletin boards of many entrepreneurs and leaders.

Bold people stand out from the group. They are confident, courageous, and directed. I believe there is boldness in most people. Given the right set of circumstances, many will take action to better the world around them.

People who choose to be bold are inspiring not just because they get big things accomplished, but because they also instigate growth, progress, and movement for themselves and others around them. Sadly, far more people wait for someone who is bold to lead the way, hoping somehow luck will shine success upon them.

Perhaps it is time to unleash the bold leader in you. Try adding these actions to your daily repertoire and see how much faster the magic of boldness takes you toward success.

01. They own their flaws and strengths. There is a difference between boldness and carelessness. Bold leaders have strong self-awareness. They know when they should take bold action and when they are out of their element. They minimize the risk for themselves and others by constantly reassessing themselves and engaging others to accommodate for personal weakness.

Be more self-aware. Engage others who can complement your strengths and compensate for your weaknesses.

02. They keep clear priorities. Someone who constantly jumps into action without a plan is not bold- just foolish. Bold people know their objectives and prioritize them clearly. They can afford to be bold because they can recognize the right opportunity when it comes along.

Know clearly what you need to accomplish and seek those changes that will move the team forward. Avoid unimportant activities that lead to distraction.

03. They speak up. Bold people are not necessarily loud or boisterous, but when they have something to say they say it. More importantly, they understand when and how to say it. Being bold does not equal being a bully or a loudmouth. Bold leaders must be better at tact and empathy because the very nature of their words will carry power and impact. Bold leaders also understand that silence is often the greatest statement one can make, and they use it judiciously.

04. They pair action with knowledge. Even though bold leaders are prone to action, they are rarely considered rash. They apply the same sense of action to learning and due diligence as they do to any other activity. Bold leaders want to make sure their actions lead to success, so they investigate before leading their team to the charge.

Improve your odds of success by doing your homework. You’ll increase your confidence and your success rate.

05. They accept the value of failure. No one is totally comfortable with failure, but bold leaders understand that greater rewards stem from greater risk. Still, they know how to mitigate catastrophic risk and how to protect their team. Bold leaders also know how to use risks to their advantage. They harness the energy and adrenaline and make sure that every failure is a learning opportunity.

Make failure an acceptable part of your process. Teach the team how to assess and limit risk, so missteps can happen without total destruction. Then get people to learn and reboot.

06. They make the most of small wins. Many people sit and wait around for the “right opportunity” before they are willing to step up and take action. Sadly, sometimes that right opportunity never comes. Bold people understand that rarely is any situation perfect from the beginning. They look to make the most of any given set of circumstances that can lead to victory, even a small one. Cumulatively, consistent little wins spell success, attracting followers.

07. They build momentum. Bold people recognize that a single victory is not enough to sustain leadership. They work to create a series of actions that help the team gather confidence, speed, and power. They have a sense of when to add energy to drive forward and when to let the momentum itself carry things forward efficiently.

‘Aluth Avurudda’ one of the biggest celebrations in Sri Lanka starts on 13th of April and ends in 14th of April that features lots of rituals and customs is one of the must things to experience.

Based on the movement of the sun from Meena Rashiya (House of Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (House of Aries) marks the end of the harvest season, Sri Lankans welcome the New Year in April with lots of rituals, fireworks and gourmet of traditional sweets.

The Sun festival or the Sinhala and Tamil New Year is a ritual performed to honor the Sun God for hundreds and hundreds of years, comes with a long history that is not experienced anywhere else.

The unique rituals and the traditions are what make the New Year special.

Neutral Period (Nonagathaya)

The New Year ritual starts from the neutral period where people keep off from all work and engage in religious activities to get the blessings to prepare for the New Year.

Lighting the hearth (Lipa gini melaweema)

With the dawn of the New Year comes the first ritual, the lighting of the hearth of the house to prepare milk rice to symbolize the prosperity.

First meal at the New Year table (Ahara anubawaya)

Food plays a major role in the New Year celebration at each house. A table with kiribath (milk rice), bananas, kevum, kokis, aggala, aasmi, aluwa, welithalapa, and many other traditional sweets become the centerpiece of any table. Every family that celebrates New Year enjoys the festival at the auspicious time after lighting an oil lamp.

Starting work and exchanging money (Weda alleema saha ganu denu)

Once the family finishes the New Year meal, they engage in some work to symbolize starting their work for the New Year. Next they perform a transaction among the family members and other respected parties. This also done with the well to thank it for the clear water provided the past year.

Anointing oil (Hisa thel gaama)

Oil prepared according to a special mixture of herbs are anointed on people’s heads to bless them with health and healing. This ritual is usually done by a religious leader, a family head or an elder superior in the village.

New Year sweets.

You cannot speak about the Sinhala and Tamil New Year without having to talk about food. These are some of the sweets prepared at almost all households during this time and shared amongst the families and friends to extend friendship or to forget any mishap during the past year.

Konda kewum – Made with coconut trickle and rice flour and deep fried.

Aasmi – A crunchy traditional sweet topped with traditional caramel syrup.

Kokis – Fried, crispy sweet made from rice flour and coconut milk.

Mung kewum – A diamond shaped sweet with a crunchy crust and a sweet paste of green gram inside.

Avurudu music and games

This is a season that’s focused on family. During this time people return home to celebrate the festival with the rest of the family. Fun games and activities play an important part at this time.

April is perhaps one of the best months in Sri Lanka due to the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival which cannot be seen anywhere else.

I love it when couples are so gosh darn cute that you could vomit. Jamie and Doug (from Married at First Sight, for those of you who don’t know), Faith and Timmy, David and Victoria. What are their secrets? How is it possible they are so damn happy all the time? Unfortunately, none of their publicists got back to me. Luckily, the secrets of happy couples are very universal, and can be applied to anyone from Bangkok to Boston.

Happy harmonious relationships are not about fireworks and roses every day. After all, life isn’t an episode of The Bachelor. Relationships come with more ups and downs than a roller coaster sometimes, but if you focus on building your relationship every day, rather than just on the big occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day), you’ll have enough glue to stay together. Imagine a building made just of the main pillars with none of the filler material like concrete or walls. It would fall apart like a game of Jenga. (I’m really working on those analogies).

Even if you are in a happy relationship, it doesn’t hurt to keep use some of these tips to keep the home fires burning. After all it’s all the little things that count.

They’re Touchy-Feely
I’m not talking about swapping spit or making out at a bar (I actually saw this once). Think more holding hands and sliding your arm around their waist. It’s been said that this makes couples happier.

They Put Their Phones Away
I know it’s hard, but sometimes you have to stop checking your emails, Facebook and Instagram for five seconds so that you can actually connect. You know, like, with another human being and stuff. You can comment on each other’s posts at work, like everyone else.

They Say “I Love You” often than usual
An “I love you” once a day keeps the divorce lawyer away. At least, that’s what I always say. It’s not enough to assume your partner knows you love them. You’ve got to say it! Affection comes in many forms, and words are one of them.

They Sleep Together
No, you horn dog, I’m not talking about doing the deed (although that’s important, too). I’m talking about going to sleep together. Cuddling up next to the person you love is essential for bonding. It’s OK to stay up late some nights, but if you spend most of your evenings by the computer or the boob tube while your partner is sleeping, you’re killing your relationship softly.

They Communicate
Which means no nagging, nit-picking or otherwise being a pain in the arse. Couples with harmonious relationships talk to each other when they have beef. They don’t trade barbs. If you’re upset about something, don’t keep it in. You’ll just end up blowing like a pressure cooker.

They Have Shared Interests
He may not share your love of gardening and you may not understand his obsession with Monday Night Football, but you should share common interests and activities that are fun for the both of you — and make a routine out of them. For you guys, it could be walking dogs at the animal shelter. Or trivia. Or canning tomatoes.

They Say “Thank You”
It’s really the little things that make all the difference, and couples who thank each other show that they appreciate one another and value their relationship. It’s not just about being polite — saying “thank you” more can actually boost relationship happiness.
